Competitor Radar
Track competitor games, compare genre benchmarks, and monitor release timelines to make smarter campaign decisions.
Competitor Radar
Competitor Radar is a developer-exclusive tool in KeyVault that gives you market intelligence about competing games in your genre. Track up to 20 competitor titles, compare your stats against genre benchmarks, and stay ahead of upcoming releases — all powered by live data from Steam and SteamSpy.
Why Use Competitor Radar?
As an indie game developer distributing keys through Gamosy, understanding your competitive landscape helps you:
- Time your campaigns better — avoid launching when a major competitor drops
- Set realistic expectations — see how your review count and player base compare to similar games
- Spot opportunities — find gaps in genres where creators are underserved
- Track market trends — watch how competitor player counts and reviews evolve over time
Getting Started
1. Navigate to Competitor Radar
Go to KeyVault > Competitor Radar in your team workspace. The tab appears in the sub-navigation bar for developer accounts only.
2. Add Your First Competitor
Click "Track Competitor", search for a Steam game by name, and click it to start tracking. Gamosy immediately fetches the game's current stats from Steam.
3. Explore the Three Tabs
| Tab | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Watchlist | Your tracked competitors with live stats (reviews, players, owners, price) |
| Benchmarks | Your own games' stats compared within their genre |
| Release Calendar | Upcoming and recent releases from your tracked competitors |
Three Tabs Explained
Watchlist
Your personal competitor watchlist displays up to 20 tracked games as cards. Each card shows:
- Game image and name with genre badges
- Reviews — total count and positive percentage
- Price — current Steam price or "Free"
- Players — concurrent players right now (from SteamSpy)
- Estimated Owners — range like "200K – 500K" (SteamSpy estimation)
- Last refreshed — when data was last updated
You can refresh any competitor's data on demand (once per hour), or let the daily automatic sync handle it. You can also add private notes about why you're tracking each game.
To remove a competitor, click the trash icon — a confirmation dialog ensures you don't accidentally delete tracked data.
Benchmarks
The Benchmarks tab shows your own released games grouped by genre. Select a genre from the dropdown to see:
- Each of your games in that genre
- Their review count, review score, estimated owners, and current players
- The price bucket they fall into (Free, $0-4.99, $5-9.99, etc.)
This helps you answer questions like: "My roguelike has 245 reviews at $14.99 — is that good for the genre?"
Release Calendar
The Release Calendar splits your tracked competitors into two sections:
- Upcoming — games not yet released or with future release dates
- Recently Released — games released within the last 3 months
Each entry shows the game's image, name, release date, and genre tags. Use this to plan your campaign timing and avoid competing launches.
Data Sources
Competitor Radar pulls data from three free public APIs:
| Source | Data Provided |
|---|---|
| Steam Store API | Game name, description, image, genres, price, release date, free-to-play status |
| Steam Reviews API | Positive and negative review counts |
| SteamSpy API | Concurrent players, estimated owner range, median playtime |
All three are queried in parallel when you add or refresh a competitor, typically completing within 2-3 seconds.
Automatic Daily Refresh
You don't need to manually refresh every competitor. Gamosy's daily sync automatically refreshes up to 10 stale competitors (those not updated in the last 24 hours). The refresh prioritizes the oldest data first, so all 20 competitors are typically refreshed within 2 days.
A daily snapshot is saved each time data is refreshed, building a historical record of each competitor's metrics over time. Snapshots are retained for 90 days.
Limits and Fair Use
| Limit | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Max tracked competitors | 20 per account | Keeps API usage sustainable |
| Manual refresh cooldown | 1 hour per game | Prevents Steam API rate-limiting |
| Snapshot retention | 90 days | Keeps database size manageable |
| Daily auto-refresh | 10 games per cron run | Fits within API rate limits |
These limits are enforced at both the application and database level.
Team Accounts
Competitor Radar is shared across your team workspace. All team members with access to KeyVault can:
- View the competitor watchlist
- Add and remove competitors
- Refresh data and view benchmarks
Changes made by any team member are immediately visible to all others.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can creators see my competitor watchlist?
No. Competitor Radar is only visible to accounts with the Developer or Both role. Creators cannot see your tracked competitors, notes, or benchmarks.
What happens when I remove a competitor?
The tracked game and all its historical snapshots are permanently deleted. You'll be asked to confirm before removal.
Why does a competitor show "0 players" or "0 reviews"?
This usually means the game is very new or has not yet been indexed by SteamSpy. Try refreshing the data. If the issue persists, the game may be too new for SteamSpy to have data.
Can I track my own games as competitors?
Technically yes — the system allows it. However, your own games already appear in the Benchmarks tab with the same data, so there's no benefit.
How accurate are the owner estimates?
SteamSpy provides estimated owner ranges (e.g., "200,000 – 500,000") based on public Steam data. These are approximations and may not reflect exact sales figures. They're most useful for relative comparisons rather than absolute numbers.
Will tracking competitors affect my Gamosy account in any way?
No. Competitor tracking is purely informational. It doesn't affect your campaigns, key distributions, or any other Gamosy functionality.
